Jim awoke to the sounds of seagulls and the glare of the early morning sun across the horizon, he had spent the night thinking about what he had been asked and with the help of his scotch had also fallen asleep on the porch. He couldn’t help but remember the accident and was fearful of the same thing happening again.
He got up and made his way to the bedroom, sat on the bed and slid an antique chest out from underneath. It was made of oak with a brass lock and was a hell of a weight. Jim got up and placed it on the bed, undid the latch and flipped open the lid. Inside sat his neatly folded uniform and a small black box with the familiar Starfleet delta etched on the top. He looked at himself in the mirror and muttered “I must be mad” then came a tap on the window.
“Jim…you in there?” he called back “Come on in Guy, it’s already open” Guy Ventura stepped into the room, slightly older and taller than Jim. He was very proud of Guy, having known him for almost as far back as he could remember, spending their misspent youth cutting class’s at the academy and getting into trouble the way mischievous friends always seem to end up doing. Guy looked at the open chest and the uniform within “Let me guess, you had a visit from the charming commander Jensen?” Jim shot him a look of disdain “Saw you too huh?” Guy nodded “Certainly did, even tried threatening me with a mandatory transfer.” “What did you tell him?” Jim opened the small box and pretended to inspect the foam backed pips and command badge “Well after some harsh discussion I told him that my final decision depends on you.”
Jim replied in an almost quizzical tone “What if I decide not to come back to Starfleet?” Guy tried to hide the sadness he felt for his friend, which almost came out in the tone of his voice “Then that’s your choice and I will head back to Starfleet and continue teaching at the academy.”
Jim looked at Guy ”One final trip out amongst the stars, that’s what I said to myself last time and look what it got me.” He got up from the bed and went back out on the porch, closely followed by Guy. Jim looked out along the coastline, the sun had risen higher and people were taking advantage of the low tide walking far in the distance. “You can’t fool me Jim, I know your already thinking about going back.” Jim stepped off the porch onto the sand “Yeah I spent most of the night thinking about Jensen’s offer, I was about to see if my uniform still fit me before you walked in.” Guy was almost surprised “Well the Dumont is in spacedock and I know for a fact that it has to go to Utopia Planitia for maintenance. I’m pretty sure Captain Metlesits wouldn’t mind if we hitched a ride.”
Jim smiled “Well I better clean myself up and get a shave.” Guy looked at Jim, eyed him up and down and just replied with one word “Yes.”
